Michael Jackson memorial service rakes in high mobile usage
In the wake of Michael Jackson’s tragic death, more than 100 million mourning fans tapped into mobile to view the memorial service via the GoTV Network, the only mobile provider to distribute live coverage. AEG, the entertainment group heading up the event, chose GoTV to cover the historical event in order to connect fans on-the-go to coverage they wouldn’t be able to access elsewhere. Just as mobile usage skyrocketed on the day of the King of Pop’s passing, Verizon Wireless also saw a boost in mobile usage during the memorial. The memorial service for Michael Jackson was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday, July 7. From 10am to noon on that day, voice calls on the Verizon Wireless network in the vicinity of the Staples Center went up 10% from the same time on the previous day. During the same time frame, data usage involving SMS and mobile Web jumped 86% from the day before. Verizon made certain to add that its network handled the traffic well.
